Dward Lee Greenbird

DWARD LEE GREENBIRD (b.1950)

My artwork is produced through an evolutionary process that manifests itself from spontaneous line drawings, consciously worked with, until a composition is completed. I call my style Surreal Primitive, which has a spiritual base on top of which my humor appears.

"Zen Ho" - a Linoleum Blockprint.

This print's composition came from a 30 second drawing. The first half was completely spontaneous.  I saw that if I added two lines, one would become the edge of a face and the other was the horizon line. Months later I thought that I would do a print from the drawing. I said what will I call the print. "Zen Ho" popped into my head. I said: what does
that mean? I thought of gung ho. It comes from a Mandarin Chinese phrase  which is: kung ho which means: work together. It all came together. The       first half of the drawing was spontaneous (Eastern) and the second half was conscious (Western). "Zen Ho" is a combination of English and Chinese, Zen (an English word for Buddhism) and Ho (meaning together in Chinese). The print is an example of a union of opposites.

"Not So Still Life, At Home With Jerome" - a Linoleum Blockprint.

This print started out as a still life. While working on the composition I saw an empty space where I could put a dog named "Jerome". There were other aspects that gave me the title. The plants were being drawn out to the oceans energy as they were positioned closer to the crashing waves. The chairs and furniture were not standing still but had some movement to them. This was no still life it was full of energy and life. The scene I created was from my experiences at Carmel California on the   coast and further up Pebble Beach.
