John
began his training as a classical musician at the age of eight. As a
pianist, John performed solo recitals every year beginning at age twelve.
He won an all state competition at age eighteen and placed as a finalist
in the international competition at Carnegie Hall at age twenty. He then
moved to Los Angeles to study privately with Aube Tzerko and continue
preparations for further competitions including one in Moscow. After a
brief period of study, John lost the use of two fingers in his right hand,
due to over extension and was forced to give up his pursuits as a pianist.
John enrolled in seminary and earned a Master of Arts in New Testament
studies. He served as a campus minister at Purdue University from
1980-1983. It was during this period that the Lord began to reveal to John
that it was necessary for him to undergo a crucifixion" to his own
ambitions and motives. The Lord would then begin a work of resurrecting in
John, His music, His message and His way of ministry. The song Embrace
The Cross, was born out of this time in John’s life when he learned
to die to himself and his own dreams.
John began to write songs and produce records in 1982 which led to his
move to Nashville, Tennessee in 1983. Upon his arrival in that city, the
Lord confirmed His call upon John by having two of his songs immediately
recorded by Pat Boone. He was then hired as an assistant producer and
worked with various artists in the Christian music industry. John also
served as the worship leader for the Belmont Church in Nashville for
several years under the direction of Don Finto. It was during this time
period that the Lord healed John’s right hand and restored his complete
playing ability.
Recordings produced and arranged by John include: Billy and Sarah
Gaines, James Ward, Honeytree, the Voices of Praise series on Reunion
Records and two children’s recordings for the Benson Company. The Lord
has given John the opportunity to write songs that have been recorded by
Ricky Skaggs, Steve Green, Pat Boone, Truth, First Call, Jesse Dixon,
Billy and Sarah Gaines, as well as many others. He has co-written songs
with Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Bill and Gloria Gather, Kim Hill, Paul
Overstreet, Bruce Carroll, and Steve Camp. And, just recently, John wrote
and had the privilege of recording the title song, God Came
Near, for Here To Him Music’s Christmas recording with author
and speaker, Max Lucado. That recording was nominated in 1999 for a Dove
Award for Praise & Worship Album of the Year.
