Chicago performance group MASS Ensemble has released their third CD, Acoustics & Light. The entire CD was recorded at Mies van der Rohe's monumental Crown Hall during the Ensemble's month-long residency at the Illinois Institute of Technology in May of 2001. The recordings feature the "Crown Instrument" which was created and designed by Ensemble member Bill Close. The "Crown Instrument" employs 24,000 linear feet of brass wire which connects to mullions throughout the building and runs through a complex bridge system. This installation transformed the famous space into a giant sculptural string instrument. The "Crown Instrument" employs the same long stringed technology that has become the Ensemble's signature.
Acoustics & Light is an enhanced CD that features 8 original tracks plus the Ensemble's version of Purcell's Dido's Lament and Tchaikovsky's Arabian Dance. The CD-Rom element consists of images and video from the Ensemble's "Crown Hall" performances and other large-scale installations. Video footage highlights the "Crown Instrument" and Drum Dancing.
MASS Ensemble is internationally known for their large-scale architectural installations, which feature the giant musical sculptures of Ensemble member Bill Close. Past performance installations include The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC; The Field Museum in Chicago; Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin North; The Prudential Center in Boston where golden strings stretched 770 feet to the top of the skyscraper, and The World Financial Center in New York City.
The Ensemble's recordings have been featured on WNYC's "New Sounds Live" Program, ESPN's Extreme Sports, National Public Radio and a WTTW documentary. They have been featured on CNN, VH-1, ABC, CBS, NBC and various news stations and newspapers through out the US and abroad.
