Ricardo Moraga is a
dynamic performer who specializes in South American folklore and brings
charm to his concerts. He was born in Santiago, Chile. Having graduated
from the University of Chile with degrees in Music Education and Sound
Engineering, he traveled to France to perfect his studies at the
University of Paris, UNESCO and ORTF (National French Radio &
Television). Later, he received his M.A. of Education at the University of
Massachusetts. His formal educational background therefore, is a composite
of training in music, sound and education.
As a lifelong learner, he has dedicated his studies to the folklore of
Latin America. He has an extensive collection of over two hundred
authentic musical instruments. He has played with musicians native to
almost all of the Spanish speaking and Portuguese speaking countries. He
has collected, compiled, composed, revised and updated everything from merengues
to cuecas.
Ricardo Moraga has also spent a great deal of his time teaching
children. He spent four years investigating and teaching folklore in the
Holyoke, MA school system where he co-produced the movie, A Heritage
Within. He subsequently taught Bilingual Ed. for ten years in the
Willimantic, CT school system. His Latino students were encouraged to turn
to their roots by playing guiro, cuatro, guitar and other
instruments. Presently, he teaches Spanish in the 2nd through 5th grades
in the Mansfield, CT elementary schools. There, he regularly takes his
guitar to class for engaging sing-a-longs. Wherever he goes, people are
drawn to him, for his talents are close to magical. |
