Denise
Denise was born 7/21/76 in Brooklyn,
N.Y. She still resides there along with her fiancé and two hairy
babies…their miniature pinschers. She was practically singing from the
day she was born. With a history of musicians, singers and entertainers on
both sides of her family, she was destined to have a life influenced by
music. She strongly possesses a singer’s soul and a songwriter’s
heart.
Always singing and dancing around the house as a
child, she tried convincing everyone that this is what she wanted to do
when she grew up. Her main focus was singing, yet she was encouraged to
play instruments. "Back then I was always told how people wouldn’t
take me seriously as a singer, especially a female singer. I remember the
advice was, `Make sure you learn everything you can about music, read it,
write it, play any instruments you can, that way you’ll never be labeled
as a stupid singer.’ That’s truly what I was told, and that’s what I
did". She was taught to play the guitar at 6 years old but never felt
as though it was the instrument for her. She started playing the flute at
9 in the school band. She quickly became a fluent flutist, yet wanted to
learn so many other instruments, mainly the saxophone. Unfortunately, she
never learned the saxophone, but she now owns one and is slowly teaching
herself.
As the years progressed, her flute playing continued
to excel and she received many awards and medals and got to play at
Carnegie Hall as principal player of her section through borough-wide
bands & orchestras. Her vocal studies strayed to the side, partially
due to the fact that she wasn’t ever allowed to be a double-major and
also because she started feeling the pressure of other people’s
skepticism. "Whenever I’d mention how I’d want to still pursue
singing as a career, people would try to tell me that music wasn’t a
‘real’ job and it wasn’t realistically possible. They
tried directing me towards becoming something more ‘real’ such as a
teacher, accountant, etc. They don’t understand that if you have
something like this in your blood, there’s nothing more ‘real’ than
that".
She attended the "Fame" high
school (LaGuardia in NYC) and graduated in 1994. This was where she
decided to study voice and realized that she couldn’t base her decisions
on judgments made by other people. "I do believe that anyone’s
dreams can become a reality. It may take a very long time, but it’s up
to you to pursue those dreams. If it doesn’t happen, yet you tried your
hardest, at least you won’t be left wondering ‘what if?’". She
had a great experience at LaGuardia and most of her confidence and
determination came from that school. She loved being surrounded by artists
of every nature and that’s where it became set in stone for her that
music was the key to her happiness.
Steve
A lifelong Staten Island resident, Steve has been
playing the piano for 13 years. He’s self-taught and attributes his
songwriting to listening to various artists. He has played keyboards
regularly for bands since 1990 ranging from cover bands, soft rock and
hard rock.
His musical start was playing clarinet in the school
band 15 years ago. "Ugh". That didn’t make him feel positive
about music at all. It wasn’t until a friend’s party where the
band’s keyboardist instantly inspired Steve to play the piano. From
there, he used his sight reading acquired from band and his vast knowledge
of where "C" was on the piano to eventually play some almost
recognizable melodies.
He continued to combine his knowledge of computers
and evolving talent in piano playing to start writing music. At first many
people laughed at his 10 minute "masterpieces", as he would call
them. Eventually, he learned to edit music and keep most songs to 3 or 4
minutes.
Combining his knowledge of music and electronics
hook-up he acquired from his job, Steve bought one keyboard after another.
He then finally bought a mixer, digital 8-track recorder, effects
processors and the like. Credit card companies loved him. From this point,
his songwriting evolved even more so and he also began engineering and
producing bands. "This helped me better understand the recording
process".
