Hobbit began some years ago (1st Age) when ‘Turk’ and Gene
sparked a vision to write music. The combination of similar rock ‘n’
roll influences, and the powerful attraction (and living in) to J.R.R.
Tolkien’s Middle Earth, opened the way to a style everyone called
"Fantasy Rock". The addition of Rusty Honeycutt and his artistic
drumworks rounded out the band. When Richard Hill came into the
"fold", the fellowship was complete, and the vision became a
reality. After some time, Rusty left the band and was replaced by the very
solid drumming of Keith Young.
A couple of years later, after drawing a very successful Regional
following, they were advised by Robin Hood Bryan (recorded ZZ—Top’s
first few albums) to become a little more mainstream than singing songs
about Mordor, wizards, and hobbits, resulting in the writing of songs like
"Love Is Forever", "Take Me Tonight", "Need Your
Love" and "Til I Get You Back". They have never lost, and
never will lose, the fantasy side of their roots, as seen in "Midyear’s
Eve", "Two Feet Tall" and "Intensity", but have a
variety of musical styles that should provide something for everyone, in
the Melodic/Pomp Rock, AOR vein. "Two Feet Tall" was beginning
to take shape. Soon after, B.S.A. took the band to New York, where the
recording turned a dream into a reality (2nd Age).
During this time, along with many self-produced concerts and countless
club dates, Hobbit opened for such acts as: Cheap Trick, Loverboy,
Nightranger, Quiet Riot, Axe, Humble Pie and Iron Butterfly. They were
also featured on Q—102 and ZooBerry LP’s out of Dallas/Ft.Worth,
including substantial air-play of "Midyear’s Eve" and
"Need Your Love" from those respective radio stations. Due to
legal problems, "Two Feet Tall" has remained "vaulted"
until now! They invite you to join their growing family, and enjoy this
unique blend of music from the land of "little people"?!
The 3rd Age has begun with in—process "workings" on a 2nd
CD, to be released in the "near" future! So, please stay tuned! |

HOBBIT — Two feet tall (9/10)
(INDEPENDENT/ Midwest Records)
ATTENTION Pomp Lovers! Here’s a lost
treasure that’s finally seen the light of day. HOBBIT was a band from
Texas/USA that grew to a popular act in Texas in the late 70s early 80s.They
opened for bands such as Cheap Trick, Loverboy, Axe & Quiet Riot but they
never really broke through to the big audience.
They had big problems with lawyers, record
labels and 3-piece suites and due to legal problems this recording has remained
in a bank vault all these years. So this is their first real release and
its a must have for fans of Pomp/Prog bands such as "Touch, Styx, Kansas,
MPG, and Angel." You can find a collection of 13 great songs all recorded
in the magic HOBBIT years between 1979-1983.
Most of the lyrics are inspired by the great
fantasy trilogy by. J.R.R. Tolkien and opener "Midyears Eve" kicks
off this CD with some great Keyboard work a-la "Touch." This is a
great Pomp rocker with a catchy chorus and with a excellent sound, remember that
these songs were recorded almost 20 years ago! The vocals of "Gene
Fields" are of finest quality and so are the rest of the musicians
"Richard Hill (Guitar/Keys), Paul "Turk" Henry (Bass)
& Keith Young (Drums). "LOVE is forever" is a superb
ballad with some really beautiful keys in the background and some
excellent vocal harmonies. "Intensity" is another superb Pomp
song. In fact, its really hard to find any "bad" songs on this
CD! Please trust me! This is a must have for all fans of Pomp/AOR.
"The Christmas song" is a good ballad that sounds like a mix of "Yes
& Angel." "The way we are" is a nice Pomp mid tempo
rocker that starts with a cool harmonized vocal intro. "Need your
love" is a superb AOR semi-ballad with a really catchy chorus.
