| The
way Kay Martin inhabits a song makes listening feel like an
intimate conversation in the dark. Her clear, smoky-sweet voice
("more like Jack Daniels than Glenlivit," according to one fan)
has been compared to Elis Regina, Helen Merrill, Linda Ronstadt, and
Blossom Dearie. On her new CD, softly, you may hear hints of these
singers, but her complex, soulful sound is all her own. Her jazz standards
come alive with fresh rhythms and compelling phrasings, and her Brasilian
interpretations fairly sizzle.
Kay grew up singing and playing folk, R&B and pop, but she
considers jazz her deepest roots: "I was crawling around to Ella and
Sarah as a baby, and my grandfather adored Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong,
the Duke." Later, when she discovered Brasilian jazz—and fusion—it
was "love at first listen," and she’s been singing sambas and
bossas—and infusing jazz with a cross-over feel—ever since.
Kay comes from the Santa Cruz-Monterey Bay area, where she studied jazz
with trumpeter Ray Brown (formerly with Stan Kenton’s band) and vocalist
Michele Rivard, among others. She's been performing in clubs and
restaurants in the area for several years—most notably at the famous
Shadowbrook restaurant in the beachside resort of Capitola. She quickly
came to the fore as one of the area’s premiere jazz divas, and now sings
in venues on the central coast and in Los Angeles.
