Real Audio

Many of the samples are provided as RealAudio sound clips.  In order to listen to these clips you will need a current version of the RealAudio Player.  You can obtain a free, no-frills version or an fully featured version from the RealNetworks web site.  RealAudio samples are provided as "streaming" audio which simply means that you so not have to first fully download the file before you hear it.  Also, you cannot save the samples.

We also advise that you have a minimum of a 14.4 modem (although faster is always better).

MusicMatch Jukebox

MusicMatch Jukebox allows you to record, organize and play digital music.  The quality is pretty good but not CD quality.  It is available as a free download from MusicMatch.com.  A higher CD quality jukebox is also available for purchase at the site.  MusicMatch Jukebox specializes in streaming MP3 files.  If you experience problems, visit the MusicMatch.com FAQ page.

Rosegarden is an integrated MIDI sequencer and musical notation editor. It is free software for Unix and X, running on systems such as Linux, FreeBSD and SGI IRIX, and now also on OpenVMS. Take a look at some pictures of it in use.

MIDI Thruway 2.0 is a system-wide replacement for all of the competing "thru" connections in the many MIDI programs running on your system. MIDI Thruway allows any MIDI input to be connected to any MIDI output, in any combination. This allows multiple instruments to be controlled from the same external keyboard, or a single sound card or MIDI module to be controlled from multiple controllers simultaneously, as well as many more elaborate connections.

NoteCard is a small program with a simple purpose: to help the user learn to read the musical notes, and to recognize them instantly. Although fluency in note-reading is only one aspect of learning to read music, it is the most tedious to master; yet it is a vital skill that is as important to reading music as facility with the times tables is to arithmetic.

Silence is an instrument for making music that could not be performed, composed, or even imagined without computers.  Silence can be used in two different modes. In the first, like an application such as Csound, Buzz, or Cubase, Silence can be used by musicians to compose music. In the second mode, like a programming language such as Common Music or Nyquist, Silence can be used by musicians to program music.

SAOL / MPEG-4 Structured Audio

SAOL stands for "Structured Audio Orchestra Language" and is pronounced "sail".  It is a powerful, flexible language for describing music synthesis, and integrating synthetic sound with "natural" (recorded) sound in an MPEG-4 bitstream.   MPEG-4 integrates the two common methods of describing audio on the WWW today: streaming low-bitrate coding (like RealAudio) and structured audio description (like MIDI files).  However, the quality and flexibility of the MPEG-4 tools is greater than other audio tools available today.
